SENTIMENTS

Well, I only miss the sea a tiny bit.
Just had this sketch kicking about, not doing much. So I made a simple little thing in Photoshop.

Ahoj!

BAKKUSHAN & CRO

Developed even more typographic posters after class today.
This time with lyrics from "Baby, Du Siehst Gut Aus!" by Bakkushan and "Einmal um die Welt" by Cro.

Third version with grunge texture
(Leading on the first poster could do with a bit of work)

Second version with paper texture
Customised with panda mask pen tooled in Illustrator

BOOKLET: PRINTED

The finished printed booklet for one of my Univeristy projects. Used InDesign to compile it as a PDF ready for print.
In printing I used Moleskine paper pasted onto regular copier paper for the inside pages and brown paper pasted over regular copier paper for the front and back cover. Took a lot of time and effort to construct the whole thing.
Two insert spreads are drawn by hand as no time was left for them to be printed, but they still give an good overall effect I think. I drew a metaphor between coffee and the sea as I made it a journey through the booklet.

Finished publication:
Title: Q (shortened from "queue")

"THE COFFEE CUP"
The icon of a caffeinated religion, pilgrimage includes: businesspeople, models, students and overworked parents alike.
It is here where we begin our voyage dear wayfarers...

Like to moan. Like to queue. Love to moan about queuing. My God they're British.

BOOKLET: PHOTOSHOP

The Photoshop edits of previous sketches for the booklet task at University.
Boosted the levels and added textures and brushes to some.

BOOKLET: SKETCHES

Had a little project for University for the past couple of weeks to produce a printed and finished booklet of sketches from a place of our choosing. Mine just so happened to be coffee shops.

Original watercolour edit scans:

White A4 sketchbook, pencil, Faber Catsell ink pen, biro, watercolour and coffee.

PERSPECTIVE

I saw a pretty inspiring and awesome quote from Billy Talent's website the other day and decided to make a poster from what the lead singer said in an interview.

Used the colour of a blue/green to link with life in some cultures then added a texture in Photoshop.

RESPONSE TO MUSIC

In class today creating album covers for bands that we like.

Things we were urged to include: mood, texture, experience and atmosphere of the music; can respond to lyrics and themes, narratives contained in the music; could include fashions of the times or a political/social message.

Questions we were asked to possibly include in the creation process: why do you feel passionate about their music? (reflect your experience)

Answer: I love the style and tone of both Billy Talent and Alkaline Trio's music, found it a bit hard to push aside remaking a cover when there are already awesome covers to these two albums.

I wanted to create two albums that I could link visual language to such as "addiction" to pills and "dead" to a crucifix.

Compiled in Photoshop CS6
2, 3 & 4 are final versions
1-3 Alkaline Trio "This Addiction" album (2010)
Grunge texture, syringe vector, prescription pill image, banner vector and Alk3 logo (completely rendered in Adobe Illustrator using pen tool)
4. Billy Talent "Dead Silence" album (2012)
Grunge texture, text and cross rendered in Adobe Illustrator, halftone brushes and mask layer

BORN OF FIRE

Made another poster after class today for one of my flatmates with a phrase she said to me about herself in a conversation a while ago.

SOME OF THAT NEW STUFF

A greeting for Dia de los Muertos.
My take on La Calavera Catrina; a design for this year's celebrations.

I wanted to create something to highlight the event of the Day of the Dead; marigolds symbolising the memory honoured by the living to the dead, crucifixes to show faith and sunrays to depict new life. The Catrina as the central figure embodies a typical depiction of DOTD, I added a veil of stars to her outfit in parallel to the Virgin of Guadalupe.

INDESIGN PRACTICE

Had an introduction to InDesign today and had to produce an article using a layout of our choice from a slideshow. I preferred the photographic magazine layout for this particular article (article source: http://www.einslive.de/musik/platten/2012/09/120906_billy_talent_dead_silence.jsp) on Billy Talent.
Article belongs to 1LIVE and photograph by Dustin Rabin for Billy Talent.

TYPOGRAPHIC POSTERS

After class today I wanted to make a couple of typographic posters in Adobe Illustrator using some lyrics. Here are the end results!

First 3: "Gewinner" by Clueso
Last: "Hanging by a Thread" by Billy Talent

OVERHEARD CONVERSATIONS

So our task for this week's discussion was typographically set-out illustrations of overheard conversations.
Seriously, I overheard nothing. Nada. Nichts. Rien. This was about the only thing I did overhear...because in a supermarket in England this is all you hear.

Enjoy it in all its simplicity.

BROWN PAPER SERIES 5

A little supplement of the illustrations using brown paper.

Mexican sugar skulls - Día de los Muertos.

AND YOU'LL NEVER GUESS...

...More bears.
Typograhic bears.

Parcel paper and Dutch sweet paperbag textures.

MAGGIE ON A DOLLAR BILL

Played around a bit in Photoshop today and wanted to do something different with "Hospital" so it came down to putting Maggie on a dollar bill (sorry Washington).

Wanted to still keep the red in there for her dress to make it different.

HOSPITAL: FIRST SKETCH IN THE NEW MOLESKINE!

Got myself some Moleskine journals the other day and decided to break one in and test the watercolour.

"Hospital" is Maggie Beauford as portrayed by Jessica Chastain in the 2012 film Lawless. (Absolutely loved this film)
Reference below. Pencil sketch, biro drawing and watercolour.
